  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 teaspoons baking
  • powder
  • 21/2 tablespoons
  • butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon

Instructions

    Sprinkle yeast over warm water to activate.

    Add flour, sugar, salt, milk, shortening, and eggs to create the dough.

    Knead the dough for 6 to 8 minutes, until it's smooth and soft.

    Place the dough in a greased bowl, turn it over to coat the top, cover, and let it rise for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, until doubled in bulk.

    Fry the doughnuts, adjusting the heat as needed to keep the oil at 375.

    Transfer the doughnuts to the prepared plates or racks.

    Glaze or fill as follows, and serve as soon as possible.
