Barbecued Brisket

A family recipe for Barbecued Brisket from the Nelson Family Recipe Book.

  • 1 (6 pound) beef brisket
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 6 cups water or enough to cover meat
  • 1 can (12 oz.) beer

Instructions

    Combine all ingredients in Dutch oven just large enough to hold the brisket.

    Bring to a boil; reduce heat.

    Cover and simmer about 4 hours or until brisket is fork-tender.

    Allow to cool to lukewarm in cooking liquid.

  5. 5

    Transfer brisket to plastic container; add 1 cup barbecue sauce.

    Cover and refrigerate up to 48 hours.

  7. 7

    Cook over medium hot coals about 15 minutes on each side, basting frequently with additional sauce.
